Reading at All Saints

As a school we love reading and encourage the children to read as often as possible to develop a love of books and authors!

Key Stage One - Swap Shop

The children in KS1 are encouraged to read at home every day and have the opportunity to change and chose their own reading book every morning as soon as they come into school.
Over a term the children collect tokens for how many times they have read at home.
For every 3 signatures in your child’s contact book we give your child 1 token.  At the end of the term the children then get to go to Swap Shop and exchange their tokens for prizes.
Prizes range from 3 tokens up to platinum plus prizes which are more than 10 tokens!

Lower Key Stage Two –

In Lower Key Stage 2 we encourage the children to read at home at least 3 times a week. Home reading is important as it can develop fluency, confidence and the understanding of texts. As a phase we offer regular Read, Write Inc and, Literacy and Language sessions which provide the children with the opportunity to use their reading and phonetic skills. We reward the children by giving prizes for 10 and 25 home reads. We give certificates and book tokens for 50, 75 and 100 home reads.

Upper Key Stage Two –

The children in Upper Key Stage 2 are encouraged to read at home every day and get their parents to comment and sign their reading record book. They are prompted to change their book as and when needed during the school day.

Each term the teachers meet as a phase to monitor:
How many home reads each child has had
Track pupil progress in effort and attainment
Discuss how children are performing in their weekly reading comprehension homework

Teachers select one child from their class to win the termly class Top Reader Award. Winners of this award are treated to an afternoon out of school with the Headteacher in which a visit to Waterstones is undertaken.
