Intent

• At All Saints we believe that learning a Modern Foreign Language prepares pupils for an everchanging world as pupils ARISE to the demands of modern Britain and our school vision.
• The specificity of All Saints teaching of a foreign language is the inclusion of ambitious and progressively sequenced French lessons within the required KS2 initiative.  
• Skill and knowledge that they will be able access in the future, will help them to learn new languages to improve their competence but also increase their cultural capital. Pupils have a distinct awareness of cultural differences and similarities between France and England.
• By fostering an interest in another language, we wish to increase the children’s capability, initiative, confidence and independent learning whilst encouraging diversity within society.

Implementation

• At All Saints, we want children to become familiarised with most lexical themes.  In Lower KS2, children acquire basic skills and understanding of French with an emphasis on developing their Speaking, listening and interacting skills.
• These are embedded and developed in Upper KS2, alongside Reading and Writing, progressing onto more complex language concepts and greater learner autonomy and personal development.
• Along with the topical curriculum learning, digital resources (Early Start online) such as talking dictionaries, flashcards, entertaining videos, karaoke and more…are used daily to further and purposefully engage our pupils.

• Every French lesson is delivered through a strong use of VAK approaches to ensure all learning needs and expectations are catered for.  The emphasis is on using the target language throughout the lesson referring to English only when and as needed. The use of actions and singing is a key feature in all French lessons, allowing for better understanding and faster memorisation. 
• Every French lesson taught within school will contain a challenge for the children to complete to expand upon their learning. This challenge will be clearly visible for the pupils, thus providing more opportunities for extended writing or higher skilled tasks for all.
• Assessments are taken continuously throughout lessons and at the end of each term, supported by pupil outcomes resulting from their work which is pitched at each child’s level.

Impact

• At All Saints, we aspire for children to enjoy French in a fun and motivational way, and develop a love and respect for different cultures, nurturing supportive and inclusive attitudes.
• French helps children to widen their perspectives: learning a foreign language in a liberating and enjoyable way and boosting their confidence over the years.  This in turn, best prepares them as they advance within the educational community.
• By using a native speaker to deliver language lessons, All Saints ensure the children’s exposure to a more authentic linguistic source and rendition; which is reflected in their continued attainment as they are ahead of their peers who have had no prior learning in primary school.
