Childhood
This term the children in year 1 have been learning about childhood and comparing life now to life in the 1950s. In history we looked at toys, homes and jobs in the 1950s and how they have changed. At the end of the topic we had a workshop where we were visited by a worker at the Guildhall museum. The children dressed up as Kings and Queens and we learnt about the different jobs that children in the Victorian era did to earn money for their families.
Geography
In Geography the children learnt about the countries in the United Kingdom and the seas around the UK. They learnt the positions of the world continents and seas. The children have been busy exploring local maps and drawing their own maps where they included keys to identify important parts of their maps.
Science
Thinking scientifically, the children in year 1 investigated which materials would be best to use to make an umbrella after learning about natural and human-made materials. The children have also been learning the five senses and the body parts linked to them.
Art
In art the children created a colour wheel using primary colours which they then mixed to create secondary colours. They then used these colours to create their own paintings. They also had a go at drawing a self portrait where they used small mirrors to carefully draw their facial features.
