This term, the children have enjoyed an exciting journey to Mexico, discovering its rich culture, fascinating history and vibrant traditions.
They began by exploring Mexico’s unique geography, locating the country on a world map and learning about its varied landscapes, including the Chihuahuan Desert. They discovered how Mexico’s physical features influence the lives of the people who live there.
The children travelled back in time to learn about the remarkable ancient Maya civilisation, finding out about their achievements, traditions and daily life. They explored Maya poetry, games, rituals and the origins of chocolate, gaining an insight into one of the world's most fascinating ancient cultures.
Through music and the arts, the children listened to traditional Mexican music, learned about its lively rhythms and even danced along to a variety of Mexican songs. They also explored the importance of festivals and celebrations, discovering how communities come together to celebrate their heritage with music, colour and tradition.
Food was another exciting part of the topic. The children sampled a range of Mexican foods, learned about traditional ingredients and flavours, and discussed the importance of spices and fresh produce in Mexican cooking.
To bring their learning together, the children enjoyed a fantastic Mexican Day, immersing themselves in the sights, sounds and tastes of Mexico through themed activities, music, dancing, food and celebrations. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate everything they had learned throughout the topic and experience a little of Mexico's vibrant culture firsthand.
