St. Martha

Frozen Kingdoms Terms 1&2

St. Martha have had a fantastic time exploring the fascinating world of the polar regions this term. They loved learning about the animals that live in these extreme environments and discovering how their special adaptations help them survive — a topic that captured their curiosity and sense of wonder. The children were also particularly interested in finding out about the Innuits, enjoying the opportunity to learn about a real community whose way of life is so different from their own.

In English, the class produced impressive newspaper reports about the RMS Titanic disaster, a task they enjoyed because it allowed them to step into the shoes of real reporters and bring history to life. They also wrote persuasive adverts encouraging people to travel on the RMS Titanic before the crash, which they found exciting as they could use their creativity to make the ship sound as grand and irresistible as possible. The children went on to write biographies about significant polar explorers and non-chronological reports about polar animals, both of which they enjoyed because they loved becoming “experts” and sharing newly learned facts. One of their favourite writing tasks was imagining they were Arctic explorers who unexpectedly encountered a yeti — a diary entry that let them use vivid imagination and adventurous storytelling.

In science, the class thoroughly enjoyed conducting insulation experiments, testing how long their hands could stay in ice when protected by gloves and butter. This practical, hands-on investigation was a real highlight, as they loved predicting outcomes, getting messy and feeling like real scientists. They also created their own Innuit-inspired art and learnt about the history and traditions of Innuit culture, which they enjoyed because it allowed them to express themselves creatively while appreciating another culture’s heritage.

The children have worked incredibly hard and shown great enthusiasm throughout the topic. They are now looking forward to their next exciting topic, which will focus on the World Wars.
