St George

St. George has loved taking part in the topic of Sow, Grow and Farm.  It has opened their eyes to the fantastic and interesting topic of farms and allotments.  The children learnt all about the history of allotments and the reason they were developed in the UK.

This topic has given the children the opportunity to write:

  •  non-chronological reports on the different types of farms around Great Britain and the world;
  • Create balanced argument on the issue of locally produced food verses imported foods;
  • Design leaflets to persuade and
  • Write a diary as overworked farmer.

To links with our writing and enhance our comprehension skills we read the Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This book enabled us to create a book report as well as write an alternative ending.

In more practical areas the children drew still life pictures and developed the skill of adding depth through shading. In our D T sessions, the children also designed a meal using seasonal produce.

Science was about mammals’ life cycle and the children created a question and developed their own hypothesis about the mass of a mammal and its gestation period. From their research they were able to form a conclusion. The children investigated the life cycles of different creatures and in a practical lesson looked closely at an egg drawing and labelling the different parts.
